The South Dakota State Medical Association's position on IM 17:
The South Dakota health insurance market is unique, being largely dominated few payers and health care systems. Because of this unique market, physicians have little leverage when it comes to negotiating paneling and credentialing requirements.
As a professional organization of more than 2,000 physicians, residents and medical students who are all dedicated to protecting the health care interests of patients and enhancing the effectiveness of physicians throughout South Dakota, the SDSMA promotes laws and regulations that protect and enhance the patient-physician relationship and improve access and delivery of quality medical care.
The South Dakota State Medical Association strongly supports and endorses Initiated Measure 17, Patient Choice for South Dakota. One of the fundamental missions of the SDSMA is to protect and preserve the patient-physician relationship. The South Dakota Patient Choice ballot measure, if passed, will make it possible for patients to maintain an ongoing relationship with their physician, which is key to successful management of one’s health. Patients should have the right to make decisions regarding their health care and that means selecting a physician who understands and treats their specific health care needs.
